Trustees Safeguarding Policy Statement

Chithurst and Amaravati Buddhist Monasteries

Our Values and Principles

The community of monastics, lay residents, staff and volunteers at Amaravati and Chithurst Buddhist monasteries is committed to practising the Buddha’s teachings on loving-kindness, compassion, and equanimity. We abide by the ethical guidelines as set out by the Buddha, which are based on Ahimsa (harmlessness). As such, we aim to acknowledge and integrate safeguarding principles into all activities at the monasteries.

We aim to:

  • Create a safe and caring environment where the welfare of all individuals, especially children, young people, and vulnerable adults, is paramount

  • Ensure that all monastics, lay residents, staff, and volunteers understand their roles and responsibilities in respect of safeguarding

  • Establish clear procedures for identifying and reporting concerns about possible abuse

  • Ensure that any allegations of abuse or suspicions are dealt with appropriately and the person experiencing abuse is supported

All of us have a responsibility to act on any concerns about the welfare of children, young people, or vulnerable adults. At the Monasteries, concerns can be reported to the designated Safeguarding Lead. The Board of Trustees of The English Sangha Trust holds ultimate responsibility for ensuring that effective safeguarding practices are implemented throughout the Monasteries.
